A Personal Perspective...
When I think about the International Day of Yoga, I reflect on my personal experiences. The presence of yoga in my life for the past 6 years or so has had a profound impact on me. Although I do not participate in the religious aspects of Yoga (which is a part of Hindu Culture) because of differing beliefs, I have a deep respect for its history and origin. I value everything I have learned from its philosophy, teachings, pranayama (breathing techniques), and asanas (physical practice).
What I Have Learned
Yoga (and my Gurus!) have taught me to establish a stronger bond with myself by practicing mindfulness, breathing techniques, and delving into different poses. Moreover, the practices have assisted me in reaching equilibrium and finding tranquility during some stressful periods in my life.
Yoga integrates the body, mind, spirit, and soul to enhance your health and general well-being and its teachings serve me both on the mat during practice and off the mat during my daily life. With Yoga you can:
🌿 Learn to let go - inhale peace and exhale stress
🌸 Achieve harmony in motion by linking breath with movement
⚖️ Find balance within by blending effort, ease and joy in your yoga and meditation practice
📚 Discover techniques that allow you to remain calm amidst chaos
☮️ Cultivate peace within yourself and with others
💡Perhaps uncover your purpose or a find deeper meaning in life
Consistency and Commitment
Embarking on a yogic journey is a lifelong commitment filled with endless learning opportunities, and I am thankful for having started on this path. What has been important in my own practice is consistency as well as showing up for myself and others who I teach.
Growth Beyond Physical Poses
They say "Yoga isn't about touching your toes, its about what you learn on the way down!" and its so true! I have consciously decided not to make my practice solely about achieving particular complex poses, but more about observing what I learn in between. In this way I am practicing Ahisma (non-violence) and allowing myself to improve gradually as my body becomes stronger and ready for more of a challenge.
These are my reasons for celebrating the International Day of Yoga, read on to learn more about this day.
Global Harmony
"On 21 June, the world unites in a collective breath—the rhythm of yoga".

Yogis gather around the world in recognition of Yoga to practice sun salutations, breathe in harmony, and connect with the core of being and the yoga community. This occasion goes beyond boundaries, languages, and cultures. Its a celebration of mindfulness, wellness and togetherness.
Origins and Significance
Originating in ancient India, the International Day of Yoga symbolizes the integration of mind, body, and spirit, as discovered by sages and seekers. In 2014, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced this yearly observance to the United Nations. The choice of June 21 is significant as it marks the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere, providing a unique backdrop for the impactful practice of yoga.
Yoga's Gifts
The celebration of yoga is rooted in its profound capacity to offer a multitude of benefits beyond enhancing flexibility and strength. This ancient practice has the remarkable ability to instill a deep sense of peace and tranquility in our minds, infuse our bodies with renewed energy, and nurture a profound sense of calmness in our souls. When you live a busy life like many people do today, its important to be able to have something that offers you a positive focus and release.
