WHAT IS YOGA?

Yoga comes from the Indian Sanskrit root 'Yuj', meaning 'to join' or 'to unite'. It is the practice of maintaining a constant state of awareness, a pursuit of inner pleasantness. This is achieved by moving through yoga poses (also called asanas) that allow your brain to focus on what you are doing in the present moment, therefore freeing the mind from other stressors from your day. Once this is learnt we can combine breathing techniques with the movements and later short meditations for a well-rounded session.

SO WHY PRACTICE YOGA?
Think of your yoga practice as an MOT for the body, keeping it stretched, toned, open and free from tension. But it is also a mindset that helps you to develop a certain way of life. Yoga encourages you to believe that there is always more to learn, that we have the ability to transform ourselves by changing habits and that by thinking this way we free ourselves to live a more content existence.

HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR THIS CLASS?

  • Ensure that you have a yoga mat and some space around it.

  • In general, it is not recommended to eat a large meal within 2 hours of class as this may cause discomfort while your stomach is digesting. A light snack is best as well as keeping hydrated before (but not during) class.

  • Wear non-restrictive clothing to allow your body to stretch and move freely.

  • Be prepared to explore a range of movement as I guide you through a set of poses.

IS YOGA RELIGIOUS?

I do not teach my yoga classes with any religious context. My classes are based around teaching students the poses (asanas) which are known to bring physical health benefits to the body. I also incorporate breathing practices (pranayama) and meditation techniques to aid well being and clarity of mind.

Yoga is a Philosophy taken from Hindu culture that can involve religious aspects if combined with chanting the names of god's or reciting hymns and prayers etc. Its important that you know where this tradition has come from.

I'M NOT FLEXIBLE, CAN I STILL DO YOGA?
Yes. Your yoga practice can help you to become more flexible over time. The goal is to practice the poses and focus on your breathing. Yoga is the journey towards the poses!
